I've Got Your Increasingly Permeable Membrane Right Here
A review of The Comas' Conductor (a.k.a. a great example of why I can't stand reading Pitchfork reviews). "I don't posit that the increasing permeability of the membrane between indie and mainstream is an insidious development; instead, it should be acknowledged in the interest of foiling nonsensical Puritanism." Read the whole thing for plenty more groan-inducing grad-student-speak. 'Tis a review that makes me want to hate any music that the author likes.

Losing The New Yorker's Cartoon Caption Contest
"Every week I enter the New Yorker's Cartoon Caption Contest, and I've never been chosen as one of the finalists.
I don't get it."

Frisbee Ticket
Matt Lament went out to Fire Island for the weekend and got a ticket for throwing a frisbee in a "no throw zone" on the beach. A frisbee ticket...I love it.

New BRMC Record
You can stream Howl, the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album, at
the band's MySpace page. BRMC's last record was severely underrated in my book. New one has a very diff vibe going though...evokes a Mungo Jerry, Mamas and Papas, acoustic guitars w/ handclappin' 60's folk vibe. For NYCers, they're playing Irving Plaza at the end of September.

How to get good
I was just reading
an interview with some ad guru and he said this:
I think it's very important not to live in the world of advertising. I actually tell all my creatives, "Oh please don't read those books on advertising, they're a complete waste of time. Read other books. Read about Hollywood, read about screenwriting, go to an art gallery, go see paintings, go see art installations, go see what other creative people are doing and how they're engaging the world!"
Reminded me of one time when there was some guy practicing drums in the room next to us. Drummer Rich told me what his advice would be to anyone who wants to get good at drums...something like this: "Don't fucking practice your one handed rolls. Go smoke a joint, read some Aldous Huxley, and listen to Ringo." I always liked that. ; )

They Come in Bright Colors
CBS2 Chicago ran a
story this morning about managing to-do lists online. This is a transcript of the post-story banter between the anchors:
Woman 1: I like post-its actually. They come in bright colors.
Man: You can take them down when you're done, throw them away, and feel like you've accomplished something and put another one on.
Woman 1: Thank you.
Woman 2: But did you ever find one in a pocket and feel like, "Ooh, I forgot about this one"?
Man: Like a phone number or something?
Woman 2: No, like a grocery list.
Man: [sarcastic] Oh, right.
Woman 2: Whatever. I don't have to dignify that with a response.
Man: Ok. I like the low-tech of the post-it note. You're absolutely right.
Woman 1: I do too and it's more colorful and fun.
