The Fearless Freaks

Brad Beesley's documentary The Fearless Freaks (trailer) follows the Flaming Lips from their early days in Oklahoma to their breakthrough single "She Don't Use Jelly," and the ensuing widespread acclaim. It's playing at the Pioneer Theater in the East Village from May 25 - May 31.

Rick Rubin Producing New Neal Diamond Record

The new Neal Diamond record is being produced by Rick Rubin and will have the sparse flavor of the last few Johnny Cash albums. Rubin says, "I don't think of them as Rick Rubin albums. I think of it as a really great Neil Diamond album or a really great Johnny Cash album. It's really from a fan's point of view. These are people that I love, and trying to get them to be what I imagine they could be. This is the album I want to hear." Amen. Can't wait to hear Neal minus the schlock, like back in the old days. Rubin's doing some valuable work...kudos Rick.

The Blackest of the Black

The Black Metal Dialogues is a fucking hilarious e-mail exchange between Lance, the King of Black Metal from Gary, Indiana (aka Dave Hill) and Mathias, a Norwegian black metal guy.

Black metal is for the few, the brave, the blackest of the black. when you promote it to anyone in any way you are selling out. some of the most extreme black metal i have ever heard is from my own bands- like witch taint, unholy chalice, mystikum (mine is spelled with a k, it is different), and summer's eve. these are all bands where i recorded and played everything on the record myself and when i was finished, played the record for myself and myself alone because i was the only one who was black enough to handle it! this is real black metal! you are too concerned with being popular and getting on the radio and stuff. i do not understand. i don't normally share my music with people because it would destroy them, but in the interest of showing you what real black metal is i will send you a copy of the most recent witch taint album, which is called "infernicus dictus dei rectum."

Thursday = art + booze + music

Mmmm...art...and free booze...and music. Forget whiskers on kittens, these are a few of your favorite things, right? So come on out on Thursday night for the opening reception of an exhibition featuring paintings by Gary Weidner and photographs by yours truly at Vice private lounge and gallery in meatpacking district (756 washington st. suite 1A, between 12th and bethune -- map).

Details: Gary, a Chicago native, creates minimalist black and white paintings that are ghostly and cool. You will dig them. He's currently showing work in Chicago, Scottsdale, San Francisco, and elsewhere in New York and you can check out his site at http://www.garyweidner.com. He'll be in the house for the opening and likes it when you pinch his cheeks. I'll be showing some of my world photography from places like Chile, Portugal, Jamaica, and Vietnam. You can get a feel for that flavor at http://www.vooza.com. Also, DJ Lamentius will be spinning an electro/darkwave/postpunk set to keep u Cialis fresh throughout the eve. Come on out and bring friends.
