The Eagles Has Landed
The move is complete and I am now a New Yorker. Fuck yeah.
Sure was hellish getting here though. Things I learned: 1) you always have more crap than you think, 2) bring an atlas when driving cross country even if you have Mapquest directions and think you know what you're doing, 3) don't try to drive a rental truck through the Holland Tunnel, and 4) any friend who helps you move is a fucking angel (thanks Simon).
This moving thing was a great way to purge. I really feel unburdened now that I've eliminated so many possessions. I had accumulated so much stuff during my years in Chicago and it was amazing how much of it was just crap. It's a tough challenge to fit your whole life into a 10' truck but it makes you realize what you really need and what's just taking up space. It feels great to be streamlined.
And so far I'm really digging it here. I like that there are hardly any retail or restaurant chains around. I like that everyone walks and carries bags in little carts. I like that hipsters and old people all live in the same area. I like that there are dozens of Indian restaurants within a few blocks of me. And all other different kinds of restaurants too. And organic places and food shops. And lots of very cool bars. I like that everything has a personality. I like that my bank, gym, park, grocery store, are all just a block or two away. In short, I like.
